Biographies

Steve Kenyon has led ensembles performing his original music at the Blue Note (NYC), Birdland, Carnegie Hall and live on WNYC radio. He has performed throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia with The New York Philharmonic, NYC Ballet, American Symphony, Brooklyn Philharmonic, NY Pops, NJSO, Philip Glass, Maria Schneider, Toshiko Akiyoshi, A Prairie Home Companion, Barbara Cook, Chuck Mangione, Blood Sweat and Tears, Aretha Franklin and Beyonce. In addition to his compositions for the NYSQ, his music is played by the NewYorkestra big band and the Pit Stop Players; groups he is also a member of. He has had pieces commissioned by Synchronicity, The Triton Brass Quintet, The International Double Reed Society and NJ City University. Some of his work is published by 3-2 Music. He was awarded a Downbeat magazine jazz composition award as a student. He has performed with some 40 Broadway shows, numerous NY City Center Encores! and many Broadway cast recordings. include his Quartet’s CD Fidel’s Nightmare, and albums with Audra McDonald, NewYorkestra, Maria Schneider, Gil Evans Project, Barbara Cook, Gotham Jazz Orchestra, Tony Trishka, Judy Collins, Maury Yeston and many releases on PS Classics. Television: Tony Awards, Kennedy Center Honors, Live from Lincoln Center, Today Show, David Letterman, Smash, Ed, Wonder Pets and many jingles. Films include Hollywoodland, Hail, Caesar!, Maggie’s Plan and What Just Happened, for which he also wrote some of the orchestrations. A National Merit Scholar, he has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The University of Miami, and teaches at Hofstra University. He currently plays Reed 1 at Mean Girls on Broadway.

Dave Noland has performed with various jazz and classical ensembles including the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, New Jersey Symphony, Long Island Philharmonic, Brooklyn Philharmonic, the New York Philharmonic, as well as numerous Broadway shows. He has also performed with various acts including Michael Feinstein, Chita Rivera, and Patti Lupone. Dave has also lead his own ensembles and has been featured as a soloist at various jazz festivals including the New Jersey Jazz Festival and the San Angelo Cactus Jazz Series.

Dave has been a member of numerous cast album orchestras and has recorded and/or appeared on television for the Tony Awards, Smash, ABC News Nightline, and Regis and Kelli. He’s also recorded as a sideman with various performers, composers and arrangers such as Idina Menzel, Hillary Kole, Don Sebesky, and Dave Stahl. In 2010, Dave was assistant conductor and featured soloist with Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away.

Dave has recorded two albums (Nomad, Ripple) that feature him as a leader, soloist, composer and arranger. Bill Donaldson of Cadence magazine writes:

“Noland’s first album reveals a saxophonist who delves into the music with feeling and an engaging tone…Noland has shrewdly compiled a series of pieces that effectively highlight the versatility of his saxophone playing from Hard Bop aggressiveness to standards to swaying, low-key waltzes to ballads.”

Currently, he plays Reed 1 at Tuck Everlasting on Broadway, and is a member of the woodwind faculty at Western Connecticut State University and New Jersey City University.

Dave Noland, tenor saxophone

John (b. 1958) hails from Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he received degrees in Music Education and Woodwind Pedagogy from the University of New Mexico. While maintaining a large private teaching studio and teaching in the public schools, John frequently performed with the New Mexico Symphony. After completing a Master’s degree in Saxophone from the Eastman School of Music, he moved to New York City in 1989, where he is a much sought after woodwind instrumentalist.

John has performed with The New York Philharmonic under Masur and Maazel, The New Jersey Symphony, New York City Ballet, New York City Opera, and American Symphony. He is a former member of the American Saxophone Quartet, and is a regular woodwind performer with City Center Encores. He has toured with Barbra Streisand, recorded with Mandy Patinkin, Patti Lupone, Donna Murphy, and Barry Manilow. His Broadway credits include Jerome Robbin’s Broadway, The Goodbye Girl, Company, A Christmas Carol, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Marie Christine, Wonderful Town, The Pajama Game, Lovemusik, and Gypsy. He studied saxophone with Floyd Williams, Marshall Taylor, Ramon Ricker, and Albert Regni; flute with Frank Bowen; bassoon with Artemus Edwards and Nancy Lutes; clarinet with Keith Lemmons.

John Winder, baritone saxophone

Todd Groves is a Manhattan-based musician performing on saxophones, flutes, clarinets, recorders and ethnic flutes. Broadway/NYC shows: Aladdin, Motown, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Radio City Music Hall Christmas Spectacular, Follies, Catch Me If You Can, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Ragtime, White Christmas, Sunday In The Park With George, Grey Gardens, Yank!, Happiness, NY City Center Encores!, Off Center & Summer Stars series, Broadway On Broadway. He has been heard on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Emmy Awards, the Tony Awards, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the Late Show With David Letterman. Recent recordings: HEM, Boyz II Men, R Kelly, Lucky Stiff (film), Josh Young, Justin Rothberg Group, Snow Geese incidental music, numerous Broadway and Off-Broadway cast albums, and numerous independent film scores. Performances: New York Philharmonic, MET Opera, New York City Opera, New Jersey Symphony, American Symphony, Audra McDonald, Michael Feinstein, Kristin Chenoweth, Randy Newman, Highland Divas, Johnny Mathis, Michael Crawford, Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin, Trenton Symphony, NJ Festival Orchestra, Little Orchestra, Kenny Werner, Andy Narrell, Ray Holman, Buster Willams, Giacomo Gates, and many others. Todd is also a member of the New Jersey Saxophone Quartet, who premiered his Delaware Jazz Suite at the World Saxophone Congress and subsequently performed it at their Carnegie Hall debut. Originally from the Philadelphia area, Todd graduated from the University of the Arts and played in Philadelphia theaters and Atlantic City casinos before moving to NYC in 2005. Since 2003, he has taught saxophone and jazz at the University of Delaware and has been a featured soloist with the university’s top classical and jazz ensembles, as well as with the Wind Symphony of Southern New Jersey, the Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey, and the University of the Arts big band.
