THE NEW YORK SAXOPHONE QUARTET

“The ultimate American saxophone ensemble”

“... immaculate precision and impressive range of
dynamics are the hallmarks of this virtuoso group.” --
Paul Harvey-Woodwind World Magazine

The The New York Saxophone Quartet represents the highest standard in peerless music-making. Since its inception in 1959, The NYSQ remains the ultimate American saxophone ensemble. At the time, four prominent saxophonists formed a quartet to perform the classical French repertoire. As the group gained notoriety and developed its own distinctive style, prominent contemporary composers of the era began writing for the group, such as Gene DiNovi, John Carisi, Calvin Hampton, George Handy, Eddie Sauter and Phil Woods. To quote Phil Woods: “One of the noticeable differences between this quartet and others is the improvisational skill displayed throughout the varied material....they play with a truly American pulse”. Our sound is unique;  resonant, vibrant, ringing and articulate.

The current members of the group are Dennis Anderson, Soprano Saxophone; Ralph Olsen, Alto Saxophone; Ken Hitchcock, Tenor Saxophone; and Lino Gomez, Baritone Saxophone. As experienced saxophonists and multi-reed instrumentalists, we are afforded the opportunity to perform within a broad range of styles from contemporary chamber music to solo jazz improvisation. On the New York and International music scene, we have made our presence known in many different professional areas, calling for our distinctive style, talent and versatility. We are recognized not only for our abilities as classical musicians, but also for our involvement in jazz education and commercial music.

Original compositions and commissions comprise the vast majority of our library. Recent works by Eric Ewazen, Michael Holober, Eric Moe, Dennis Anderson, Edward Paul Mascari and Dorothy Hindman were premiered at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. We continue to program works from the classical saxophone repertoire, transcriptions and special arrangements from the American popular song book featuring the music of George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Scott Joplin, Victor Young and many others.

Our classical repertoire combined with a vast library of jazz and contemporary chamber music material, enables the NYSQ uniquely capable of presenting a diverse program designed to appeal to any audience. Our specialty material for saxophone quartet with voice, tuba, trumpet, rhythm section, chamber ensemble or symphony orchestra offers an interesting variety of performance venues. Our extensive academic background and years of professional experience speaks for itself. Our clinics and master classes address problem solving techniques within the saxophone quartet, working in a recording studio, doubling skills, classical performance practice, choice of repertoire and all matters pertaining to the Art of the Saxophone, including improvisation.

We have appeared in concert in the USA, Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, Italy, Great Britain and Japan, including performances at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Auditorium, Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall,  Dizzy Gillespie Auditorium,  Charlotte Performing Arts Center, Mannes School of Music, WQXR and WNYC Radio. We have performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, participated in international music festivals, Community Concerts Tours and World Saxophone Congresses.

No matter what the audience, our performances have earned rave reviews and worldwide acclaim. The NYSQ’s most recent CD URBANOLOGY, featuring the music of contemporary New York Composers and Arrangers is available through this web site or on cdbaby.com
